Why Should Employers Provide Breastfeeding Support at Work?
Employers are required by federal law to provide a “reasonable” amount of time for nursing employees to express breast milk and provide a private space other than a bathroom to express milk.
Not only is it the law in Illinois for employers to make reasonable efforts to allow nursing employees to express breast milk, but supporting breastfeeding has benefits for employer businesses too.
According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, breastfeeding can help to reduce medical costs of nursing mothers and infants, nursing employees are less likely to miss work, and that supporting nursing employees in the workplace ensures higher employee productivity and loyalty.
Women and children are the fastest growing workforce in the U.S. and providing breastfeeding-friendly accommodations encourages positive public relations and company image.
