Details are still sketchy this morning (Tuesday, July 9, 2019), but Elgin and Chicago police have reported what appears to be the fatal shooting of a 41-year-old man who allegedly carjacked and kidnapped two people in Elgin, then fled to Chicago, where he was shot to death by Chicago police.

According to Elgin and Chicago police department social media posts and media reports, a man hijacked a vehicle in the 100 block of North Porter Street in Elgin sometime after midnight Sunday, July 7, 2019.

At around 6:46 a.m. Monday (July 9, 2019), an off-duty Chicago police officer saw a male and female handcuffed together and saying they had been kidnapped.

The off-duty officer reported the incident, and police found the man in an apartment in the 6200 block of West Grand Avenue, where a gunfight took place, and the man was shot.

He was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition, and later died.

No officers were injured. A weapon was recovered from the scene, according to media reports.

“This does not appear to be a random act, and the kidnapping victims were known to the offenders,” the Elgin Police Department said via Facebook.

“The victims have been located safely in Chicago, and they are providing statements to Chicago and Elgin detectives,” Elgin police said.
