It reads like a scene out of a television cops show or thrill-ride movie.

A Chicago man is in custody after a series of Saturday-morning carjackings at gunpoint, a car chase and serious crash.

Calvin Taylor, 26, of the 1300 block of Lorel Avenue, Chicago, is being held on $500,000 bond, and has been charged with:

• Armed Violence, a Class X felony.
• Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, a Class X felony.
• Possession Stolen Motor Vehicle (X3), a Class 2 felony.
• Unlawful Use / Weapon, a Class 3 felony.
• Aggravated Unlawful Use / Weapon in Vehicle, a Class 4 felony.

Police said Taylor is also wanted by the Illinois Department of Corrections on a parole violation warrant for Motor Vehicle Theft.

According to an Aurora Police Department news release, the bizarre series of events began at around 5:25 a.m. Saturday (June 29, 2019) on the city’s Near West Side.

At that time, Taylor approached a 36-year-old driver at a gas station in the 300 block of South Broadway, displayed a handgun and carjacked the driver’s gray 2004 Kia minivan.

At 5:33 a.m., an Aurora police patrol officer noticed what appeared to be the same vehicle stalled on the road near Lake Street and Indian Trail, a few miles away from the scene of the carjacking.

The officer quickly learned that Taylor crashed the Kia, at which time a 33-year-old Sandwich man stopped to render aid. Police said Taylor abandoned the first stolen car and jumped in the Good Samaritan’s vehicle, a black 2005 Chevrolet, and fled the area.

Officers discovered a loaded handgun in the passenger compartment of the first-stolen Kia minivan.

At 5:37 a.m., Aurora police dispatchers received a call of a rollover crash on I-88 near Farnsworth Avenue involving the newly stolen black Chevrolet.

Another motorist, an 18-year-old Sycamore woman, stopped to render aid, and Taylor stole her gray Dodge Avenger, driving east on I-88, according to police.

A regional broadcast to all area police agencies was made, and members of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Aurora Police Department Drone Team responded to assist.

At 7:29 a.m., police were notified by the Illinois State Police that Taylor and the gray Dodge Avenger had been located near I-290 in Bellwood and, after a brief vehicle pursuit, Taylor had crashed and was taken into custody by State Police.

Taylor received a broken leg and broken ankle during one of the car crashes, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

None of the victims in this case were injured, and police say no other suspects are at large.

Taylor remains in custody at the Kane County Jail. His parole violation warrant with the Illinois Department of Corrections remains active, and he will be returned to IDOC custody at a future date.

Charges are not proof of guilt. Taylor is presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial at which it is the burden of the state to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
