4 Kane County Communities Rank in Top 8 For Apartment Renters

Apartment Guide, a website for renters and prospective renters, has posted the “8 Towns Near Chicago Where You Should Live,” and four of those towns are right here in Kane County.

The “top eight” are Elgin, Aurora, Naperville, Joliet, Chesterton (IN), Geneva, Algonquin and Gurnee.

Here’s a brief look at the communities from Kane County, and why they are coveted by apartment renters.

No. 1 — Elgin

No. 1 on the list is Elgin, where the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $1,360, according to Apartment Guide.

“Located along the Fox River, this suburb northwest of Chicago is the eighth largest city in Illinois. Residents take advantage of their proximity to the Fox River Bike Trail, while arts and culture lovers will appreciate the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and Historic District,” the website said.

The story mentions Santa’s Village in nearby East Dundee and the Milwaukee District West Line runs right along downtown Elgin as reasons Elgin is attractive to renters.

The Elgin stop is one large block away from the Elgin Tower Building and Fountain Square Apartments.

Just as a heads up, Elgin ranks No. 5 among Apartment Guide’s “10 Illinois Cities Where Rent Prices Are Increasing the Most.”

No. 2 — Aurora

Aurora is called the “City of Lights” but most people are drawn to the city for many other reasons, including its affordable cost of living compared to its neighbors.

According to Apartment Guide, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Aurora is $1,104.

“The Fox River not only connects the communities around the Aurora area but the city also has the longest stretch of unbroken shoreline of any community along the river, making its trails popular among cyclists, runners and walkers,” the website said.

A Metra line features two stops to Aurora, making it particularly convenient for those who work in Chicago or want to venture into the city for fun.

If you’d like to rent an apartment in Aurora, you might want to act fast. The city ranks No. 7 in Apartment Guide’s “10 Illinois Cities Where Rent Prices Are Increasing the Most.”

No. 6 — Geneva

  • Distance to Chicago: 43 miles
  • Average rent for a one-bedroom apartment: $1,381

“Midwestern charm with big city amenities” are among the reasons residents love living in Geneva.

According to Apartment Guide, the average rent of a one-bedroom in Geneva is $1,381.

Geneva’s week-long Swedish Days Festival in the summer draws crowds from near and far, and “its downtown is bustling as families and friends enjoy shopping the charming boutiques or dining at its many local restaurants,” Apartment Guide said.

No. 7 — Algonquin

The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Algonquin is a little higher than the others, at $1,573.

But Algonquin boasts lush and mature trees line the winding streets filled with old Victorian homes, quaint shops and local restaurants of this Chicago suburb, strong schools and beautiful parks.

“Although it’s 43 miles from Chicago, it’s a short trip to the city by either train or the nearby expressway,” Apartment Guide said.
