Canadian National Closes Bowes Road Rail Crossing Sept. 3-5

Heads up if you plan to drive on Bowes Road in Elgin after the Labor Day weekend.

The Kane County Division of Transportation announced today (Monday, Aug. 26, 2019) that the Canadian National Railroad crossing of Bowes Road near Nesler Road in the city of Elgin will be closed from 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, through 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019.

KDOT said the closure is necessary to allow Canadian National work crews to safely and more quickly perform a full crossing rehabilitation and repaving of the crossing area.

There will be a posted detour route and message boards on Bowes Road announcing the closure and providing details on the detour route. A map of the detour route is provided with this announcement.

Any questions or concerns may be directed to Kurt Nika, KDOT’s chief of traffic operations and permitting, at 630-584-1170.

Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour routes and expect delays in the area surrounding the closure and posted detour route.

Warning To Drivers

KDOT warns drivers to be prepared to reduce their speed, exercise caution, and be extra alert. Watch for construction workers, construction vehicles entering or leaving the site, and obey flaggers and other traffic control devices within the work zone.

KDOT reminds drivers that is illegal to talk on a cell phone or text while driving through a highway construction work zone. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375.
