Elburn Police Capture Stolen Vehicle, 2 Teens Charged With Car Theft
The Elburn Police Department recaptured a stolen vehicle and secured felony charges against a 15-year-old and 19-year-old they say stole the vehicle.
According to a village of Elburn Police Department news release, officers were dispatched a around 2:10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, to a report of a suspicious vehicle and subjects at the BP gas station located in the 900 block of North Main Street.
Upon arrival, the officers began a check on the vehicle, a 2018 Volkwagen Atlas, and found that it had been reported stolen out of Carol Stream earlier last week.
The two occupants of the Atlas could not provide proof of ownership or the vehicle owner’s name.
Both subjects were taken into custody and a search of the vehicle resulted in finding two bandana’s on the front seats of the vehicle as well as a “look alike” black BB gun located under the front seat of the vehicle.
The Kane County States Attorney’s Office approved a felony charge of Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle for both subjects.
One subject is a 15-year-old male from Carol Stream who is being held at the Kane County Juvenile Detention Facility. The second subject is 19-year-old Yavante S. Ward of Bloomingdale, who is being held at the Kane County Jail.
A Carol Stream police detective responded to Elburn to assist in the investigation for Carol Stream’s original stolen vehicle report. Carol Stream police also advised additional charges from them may be sought.
The charges are not proof of guilt. The defendants are entitled to a fair trial at which it is the burden of the state to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
