If you wonder what the nocturnal world of our forest preserves looks like, come explore it with naturalists during the Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s Nighttime Nature Series!

Each month, you can visit a different forest preserve to learn about various nocturnal habits. Learn about the three upcoming programs below!

Join us for “Flying Squirrels” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Elburn Forest Preserve, located at 45W061 IL Route 38, Elburn. You’ll learn about and seek Kane County’s smallest tree squirrel, the southern flying squirrel. You’ll start with a brief presentation, and then head out for a flashlight-free night hike!

Next, come to “Cicada Songs & Katydid Calls,” program from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at Burnidge Forest Preserve, located at 14N035 Coombs Road, Elgin. Beginning at dusk, you’ll listen to the last of the daytime choristers wind down, as the nocturnal insects begin their symphony.

Then join the “Creatures of the Night,” program from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, located at 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles. Come learn about some of our local nocturnal animals that might have a bit of a bad reputation, such as owls, bats, skunks and more.
