Labor Day was created as a “workingmen’s holiday” after it was started in New York City in 1882, according to the History.com.

While some places stay open — like major stores and hospitals — many people, including federal workers, will be able to take a the three day weekend to enjoy a little extra vacation.

If you’re driving, some good news is that gas prices are expected to be the cheapest in three years — nationally, at least, according to AAA. Folks are expected to be traveling in record numbers this coming weekend.

Speaking of folks, the Fox Valley Folk Music And Storytelling Festival will be in full swing this weekend at Island Park in Geneva, and is just one of many events taking place locally on Labor Day. Scroll down to see more about Metra deals and what’s happening in Chicago.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed in Kane County, IL, on Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 2, 2019):

Banks

• The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is closed.
• Local banks are closed.

Businesses

• Many businesses are open on Labor Day, but consult your local chambers of commerce for more information.
• Most big retailers are open. The exception is Costco.
• Many pharmacies will be open both days, including CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid.
• Home improvement stores Home Depot and Lowe’s are open. Most Ace Hardware stores are open, and in fact, some locations will be open with extended holiday hours of operation on Monday, Sept. 2.

Cities And Villages

• Municipalities’ non-emergency offices are closed.
• In general, refuse, recycling, and yard waste collection services will be delayed by one day for the entire week.

Federal Government Offices

• Labor Day is a federal holiday, so offices are closed on Monday.
• That includes Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory here in Kane County, where Wilson Hall and Lederman Science Center are closed for the holiday.

Kane County

• Kane County offices and courts will be closed Monday, Sept. 2, in observance of Labor Day.
• You can drop off your property tax bill in the drop-off box behind Building A, however, if you’re so inclined.

Libraries and Park Districts

• Most libraries and park district offices are closed. But, some Park District swimming pools are open. Just to be sure, you should check with your local library or park district …

Post Office

• UPS, FedEx and the United States Postal Service do not pick up or deliver on Labor Day. In fact, the FedEx holiday service schedule says the Labor Day holiday is Aug. 30 through Sept. 3.
  
• U.S. Postal Service offices are closed.

Schools

• Closed.

Transportation

Metra

Metra will offer early getaway service from downtown on Friday, Aug. 30, to help commuters get an early start on the summer’s last holiday weekend.

Ahead of Labor Day weekend, early departure schedules will be in effect for nine of Metra’s 11 lines. Most of these schedules include extra service prior to the regular 5 p.m. start of the rush hour, with the cancellation or modification of some later rush hour train schedules.

“We want our customers to get as much extra fun out of summer as possible this holiday weekend,” said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski. “So, we’ve extended our $10 Weekend Pass to include Labor Day. Our Family Fares, which allow kids 11 and under to ride free with a fare-paying adult, will also be extended through the holiday weekend, making Metra the most affordable choice for fun in the city.”

The Chicago Jazz Festival at Millennium Park, fireworks and a lobster festival at Navy Pier as well as the North Coast Music Festival at the Huntington Bank Pavilion on Northerly Island are just a few of the many events to enjoy over Labor Day weekend. Metra’s $10 Weekend Pass allows unlimited rides anywhere on our system. The pass, which is normally valid on Saturdays and Sundays, will also be available for travel on the Monday holiday. The pass can be purchased on board and through the Ventra App.

On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, Metra will operate all lines on a Sunday/holiday schedule. Metra’s SouthWest Service, Heritage Corridor and North Central Service lines will not operate on Labor Day. Alcohol restrictions will also be in effect and no alcohol will be allowed on board Metra trains after 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29 and Friday, Aug. 30 and all day Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1.
