KDOT Reopens Silver Glen Road Sept. 3-5, Due To Rail Crossing Closure on Bowes Road
The Kane County Division of Transportation is opening lanes to help drivers deal with rail-crossing repair work on Bowes Road.
When KDOT officials learned that Canadian National Railroad was going to close the Bowes Road rail crossing for pavement improvements from Sept. 3 through Sept. 5, they realized there would be a problem for drivers trying to get around the Elgin area, due to other road-improvement projects.
So, officials announced today (Friday, Aug. 30, 2019) that they would temporarily lift a detour and road closures associated with bridge replacement work on Silver Glen Road Bridge over Otter Creek, located about three-quarters of a mile west of Randall Road.
From Tuesday, Sept. 3, through Thursday, Sept. 5, Silver Glen Road between Corron Road and Randall Road will be temporarily open to all vehicles able to drive on a 12-foot lane, including truck traffic.
The detour restricting any traffic over a maximum width of 10 feet will be temporarily suspended, and the maximum width will now be 12 feet during that three-day time period. The maximum width of 10 feet posted truck detour for the Silver Glen Road Bridge over Otter Creek project using Bowes Road will resume on Friday, Sept. 6.
Although the detour will be temporarily lifted, the pedestrian bridge on Silver Glen over Otter Creek will be closed, starting the week of Sept. 3. Pedestrians and bicyclists are advised to use caution, and if possible, to avoid the use of the area during construction for the safety of both the workers and the residents.
During the working hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, the contractor will be using both roadway shoulders along the bridge to temporarily store vehicles and equipment. Silver Glen Road will continue to be temporarily reduced to one lane of travel in each direction
during the duration of the project, using temporary traffic signals.
The pedestrian walkway may also be intermittently closed during this time. Motorists are to be cautious and be alert for equipment within the roadway shoulder areas and the workers walking within these areas.
Motorists should expect delays while traveling through the work areas and should add additional time to their commutes.

Warning To Drivers
KDOT warns drivers to be prepared to reduce their speed, exercise caution, and be extra alert. Watch for construction workers, construction vehicles entering or leaving the site, and obey flaggers and other traffic control devices within the work zone.
KDOT reminds drivers that is illegal to talk on a cell phone or text while driving through a highway construction work zone. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375.
