The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office will review the investigation of a Wednesday night officer-involved shooting of an armed 54-year-old “suicidal subject” who police say ignored police warnings and was trying to gain access to a home.

According to a North Aurora Police Department news release, North Aurora officers were dispatched at 11:17 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 21, 2019) to the 600 block of Birchwood Drive for a report of a suicidal subject.

Officers were advised that the 54-year-old male subject was driving a gold Lincoln Navigator and was believed to be armed with a handgun.

When officers responded to the area, witnesses told police the man was making suicidal statements and threatening to shoot someone, according to the news release.

At about 11:37 p.m., an officer saw the man driving in his Lincoln Navagator in the area of Timber Oaks Drive and Eastview Road. According to police officers attempted to stop the man but he did not stop until pulling into his driveway in the 600 block of Birchwood Drive.

Police said the man had a handgun and was holding it to his head.

“The subject exited his vehicle, was moving toward the occupied residence attempting to gain entry through the open garage door, and ignored multiple commands to stop,” the news release said. “Fearing for the safety of the individuals in the house, an officer fired one round, striking the suspect, who fell to the ground.”

Officers began lifesaving efforts until paramedics arrived and transported the subject to AMITA Health Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where the man died at 12:35 a.m., according to reports.

Police said a handgun was recovered at the scene.

North Aurora officials said the officer involved is a 13-year veteran of the Police Department and, per policy, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation of this incident.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation.

In accordance with the Illinois Police and Community Relations Act, the Kane County State’s Attorney will review the investigation to determine if the use of force was justified.
