Still Time To Sign Up For Sheriff’s Office ‘Experience of a Lifetime’ Police Academy
Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain is offering a free 10-week course on police work — and there’s still time to sign up online, if you act quickly.
Sheriff’s deputies have compiled an educational and fun set of hands-on demonstrations, live classroom instruction and one-on-one learning experiences designed for students to develop a better understanding of the Sheriff’s Office operation.
“These training opportunities can be an experience of a lifetime that can be utilized daily and can benefit you throughout your life,” Hain said.
The course is ideal for educators, community leaders, neighborhood watch leaders, elected officials or students pursuing a degree in criminal justice.
The free course takes place on Wednesday evenings and runs from Sept. 11 through Nov. 13.
Topics include a K-9 demonstration, traffic stop demonstration, bomb squad demonstration, a SWAT demonstration, tours of the KaneComm 9-1-1 center and Kane County Coroner’s Office, crisis intervention techniques, court services and corrections facilities.

What is the Citizens Police Academy
The Kane County Citizens Police Academy is a no-cost 10-week program designed to provide the Citizens of Kane County with an insight and understanding of daily law enforcement operations. The program consists of a three-hour class conducted once a week; and, the curriculum addresses a myriad of policing subjects and its interrelationship to the community.
The Sheriff’s Office conducts a spring and fall session each year. Classes are limited to no more twenty-five students in each session.
Why do we conduct the program?
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office offers the Citizens Police Academy so that our officers can interact with area residents in an informational setting, as well as so that our neighbors feel fully informed regarding the role of public safety in their local community.
What are our goals?
Kane County deputies volunteer their time, as well as prepare their course curriculum and competencies based on real-world experiences. The program has been developed to allow for small-group interaction and exchange. The small-group settings allows us to exchange information, and develop deeper relationships with you, our neighbors.
What topics are covered?
Topics that are taught include, and may not be limited to: Patrol Tactics; Bomb Disposal; Criminal Investigations; Traffic and DUI Enforcement; K-9 Unit; Firearms; Crime Scene Investigation; SWAT; and, Neighborhood Policing.
Is the Citizens Police Academy for me?
The Kane County Citizens Police Academy is designed to provide students with an accelerated understanding of what it takes to become a Sheriff’s deputy and the various areas within the Sheriff’s Office. The course is designed for enthusiastic learners who are of age eighteen years of age or older and wish to strengthen community partnerships. A criminal background check and waiver of liability is required prior to admittance.
