Target, Walmart Offer September Discounts, Gift Cards For Recycling Car Seats

This just in: Kane County residents can get some great discounts and/or gift cards for recycling child car seats this month.

According to Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland, Target and Walmart are more or less tag-teaming during the month of September to offer folks this recycling opportunity.

At Target, you can recycle a car seat from Sept. 3 through Sept. 13 and receive a coupon to save on a new seat, stroller or select baby gear. Click this link to learn more about Target’s Offer!

Target Car Seat Trade-In FAQs

What is the car seat trade-in program?

Guests who trade in their old car seats will receive a 20 percent off coupon toward a new car seat, car seat base, travel system, stroller or select baby home gear. Select baby home gear includes playards, high chairs, swings, rockers and bouncers.

When is the car seat trade-in program taking place?

Tuesday, Sept. 3, through Friday, Sept. 13, 2019.

What type of car seat qualifies for a trade in?

Target will accept and recycle all types of car seats, including: infant car seats, convertible car seats, car seat bases, harness or booster car seats, as well as car seats that are expired or damaged. Guests will receive a 20 percent off coupon for trading in any one of these items.

Where do I bring my old car seat to trade-in?

Car seats can only be traded in at a Target store. Target will have drop-off boxes for guests’ unwanted car seats located near Guest Services.

How do I receive a coupon for trading in an old car seat?

You can pick up a coupon from Target Guest Services, which will be located near the drop-off boxes.

What is the coupon offer and how do I redeem it?

You will receive a 20 percent off coupon toward a new car seat, booster seat, car seat base, travel system, stroller or select baby gear. Coupons can be applied to both in-store and online purchases and is eligible through Sept. 14, 2019. This coupon can be stacked with existing baby sale items, such as 10 percent off select car seats.

Are all stores participating in the car seat trade-in program?

All stores, excluding the small-format stores, are participating in the program.

What does Target do with the car seats that are traded in?

Materials from the old car seats will be recycled by Target’s partner, Waste Management, to create new products such as pallets, plastic buckets and construction materials such as steel beams and carpet padding.

Is this the first time Target has had a car seat trade-in program?

Target introduced its first car seat trade-in program in April 2016. Since the program launched, more than 789,000 car seats, or 11.98 million pounds of car seats, have been recycled.

Walmart: Don’t Toss It, Trade It In-Store!

Did you know that car seats expire? Has your kiddo outgrown their car seat? Safety is number one with our little ones, and if a car seat has expired or your kiddo has outgrown the car seat, it is time for a new one! As part of JPMA’s National Baby Safety Month, Walmart has teamed up with TerraCycle to recycle used car seats.

From Sept.16 through Sept. 30, bring in the car seat that your kiddo’s outgrown and get a $30 Walmart gift card for your baby’s next car seat!

Car seats collected in this program will be recycled 100% by TerraCycle and each component will be diverted from the landfill.

Here’s how it works

  1. Bring your car seat to the trade in event at your participating Walmart Supercenter.
  2. Take the car seat to the Customer Service counter to be recycled
  3. Receive your $30 Walmart gift card* that you can use in-store or online to buy items for your baby

More details:

  • Limit two trade-ins per household
  • Any car seat brand accepted
  • Booster seats are not eligible for trade in
