Wahlburgers Plans March Opening in St. Charles

It was this past March when celebrity Donnie Wahlberg and St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina and a bunch of other folks lifted ceremonial shovels of dirt and announced the construction of the first Wahlburgers in Kane County, IL.

Now, with the pending approval of a liquor license, it appears the highly anticipated celebrity-owned burger shop is set to open in March of 2020.

According to the city of St. Charles and local media sources, the city’s Liquor Commission on Monday gave the OK for a liquor license for the restaurant now under construction at 825 S. Randall Road.

There’s more than the usual amount of hoopla for a restaurant opening in part because of the local celebrities involved in the project: Blue Bloods actor and former New Kids on the Block boy band member Donnie Wahlberg and his wife, actress, model, TV host Jenny McCarthy.

Wahlberg’s celebrity brothers, too, are involved in the family business — Mark Wahlberg, “the world’s best-paid actor in 2017,” and Paul and Bob — and you can follow their restaurateuring exploits in Wahlburgers, an American reality television series that aired from 2014, to July 31, 2019, on A&E.

Pending City Council approval of the liquor license, everything is a “go” for a March debut, officials said, with March 2 mentioned as a possible “soft opening” date.

The restaurant will have a full-service bar, a sit-down dining area and an outdoor patio and the decor includes memorabilia from Donnie and Jenny McCarthy and all the Wahlbergs.

This Wahlburgers will be the second in Illinois. The first opened at 2 E. Ontario St. in Chicago.

During the groundbreaking ceremony back in March, Donnie Wahlberg said he made a promise to build a Wahlburgers — which now includes more than 19 franchises in the U.S., Canada and England — in his adopted home community.

“To bring one here to St. Charles — my children went to high school here, my wife and I have set up roots here — it means so much,” he said.
