ASA Lori Schmidt Named Child Advocacy Center’s Assistant Director
Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon has named longtime Assistant State’s Attorney Lori Schmidt the assistant director of the Kane County Child Advocacy Center.
Schmidt is a 16-year prosecutor, having joined the office in 2003, and has spent her legal career advocating for children. While with the Kane County SAO she worked in the Domestic Violence, Abuse & Neglect and Juvenile divisions before being assigned to the CAC in 2008.
Before and while attending The John Marshall Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor, she worked for the Cook County Public Guardian’s Office advocating for DCFS wards.
“I’ve seen the horrible things that happen to kids from many perspectives, and I’m committed to ending the injustices,” Schmidt said. “I’m grateful to be able to advocate for vulnerable kids.”
In her 11 years at the CAC, Schmidt has earned a reputation among the Kane County legal community as a strong and tireless voice for crime victims, and as an outstanding litigator who willingly tackles any assignment. She was named the office’s Prosecutor of the Year for 2016.
As the CAC assistant director, Schmidt will absorb leadership duties by overseeing investigations and multidisciplinary practices while CAC Director Debra Bree devotes more time to seeking alternative funding sources for the center’s growing number of referrals and increasing caseload.
“I‘ve always appreciated Lori’s commitment to her work and to victims. She is a true defender of children,” McMahon said. “Lori has always been a leader and possesses outstanding skill in her work to end child abuse.”
Reporting Child Abuse
As part of the CAC’s continuing effort to improve awareness about child abuse and neglect and how the public can help, the CAC has joined with CASA Kane County and the Kane County Regional Office of Education to produce this flyer (at right), which is being distributed anywhere children gather.
he message is simple: You don’t have to be a mandated reporter to report suspected child abuse and neglect. Anyone can report it. Just call the DCFS hotline at 1-800-25-ABUSE (1-800-252-2873).
