D301 Bus Aide Charged With Striking Young Child, Knocking Out 2 Teeth

A Kane County Sheriff’s Office investigation has resulted in criminal charges against a Burlington Central School District 301 school bus aide for allegedly striking a special needs student in the face, knocking out two teeth.

Jean M. Micklevitz

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon has charged 63-year-old Jean M. Micklevitz with the offense of aggravated battery to a child, a Class 3 felony.

Kane County prosecutors allege that the morning of Oct. 2, 2019, Micklevitz struck a child younger than 13 years old in the face, knocking out two teeth.

According to Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain, Micklevitz was the helper on a bus for a special needs student. As the child got onto the bus he asked for a juice box, and Micklevitz told him that food and drink are not allowed on the bus. The child refused to move from the bus steps. Micklevitz grabbed him and began to drag him to his seat, and then struck him in the face multiple times, knocking out two teeth.

Following the investigation, a Kane County judge issued an arrest warrant on Oct. 23 and set her bail at $30,000, with 10 percent ($3,000), to apply for bond. Kane County sheriff’s deputies took Micklevitz into custody that afternoon.

She posted the $3,000 bond and was released.

Micklevitz’s next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 30, 2019, in Courtroom 217 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

If convicted of the offense, Micklevitz faces a sentence of between two and five years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections, or probation.

In addition, Micklevitz must register for 10 years as a violent offender against youth in accordance with the Illinois Violent Offender Against Youth Act.

The charges against Micklevitz are not proof of guilt. Micklevitz is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
