Ex-Carpentersville Teacher, Coach Gets 112 Years For Assaulting Child — 11 More Victims ID’d
A former Community Unit School District 300 teacher’s aide and substitute teacher, and youth soccer coach for the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting a child he knew.
Kane County Circuit Judge Donald M. Tegeler, Jr., on Friday (Oct. 18, 2019) sentenced 64-year-old Carlos A. Bedoya to 112 years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
A Kane County jury on Aug. 9, 2019, convicted Bedoya of the offense of predatory criminal sexual assault, Class X felony, eight counts.
Bedoya faced a minimum sentence of 48 years in prison.
Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Sarah Seberger and Lori Schmidt presented evidence during the trial that between August 2015 and June 2016 Bedoya sexually assaulted the victim, who was younger than 13 years old at the time. Bedoya knew the victim.
The sexual contact occurred in Bedoya’s home, at Spring Hill Mall and at Golfview Elementary School in Carpentersville, where Bedoya was employed.
The sentence is 14 years for each of the eight counts, to be served consecutively. In addition to the prison term, Bedoya must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act.
Charges against Bedoya remain pending in five cases with similar allegations involving 11 additional victims. His next appearance in those cases is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 15, 2019, in Courtroom 311 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
The pending charges against Bedoya are not proof of guilt. Bedoya is presumed innocent and it entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said:
“Carlos Bedoya is a predator who seeks out vulnerable children. His criminal behavior is appalling, and his interest in kids is only for his own perverted gratification. He belongs in prison for a very long time so he can no longer be a threat to children.
“My thanks to the victim who bravely came forward, preventing this defendant from harming anyone else, and to ASAs Seberger and Schmidt, and the team at the Kane County Child Advocacy Center for their hard work on this case.”
