Last Night’s Rain Totals: Batavia Got 1.56 Inches, Causing Flash Floods
For the fifth time in the past week, a portion of our area had heavy rain, this time late last night/early this morning on the immediate north side of Chicago
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, flash flooding resulted from 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches in two to three hours.
In Kane County, Batavia led the way with 1.56 inches.
The good news is that the tropical air mass that is atypical for October and caused these heavy rain events is departing.
Fast Facts
- A tropical-like air mass that was extremely rare for October results in a period of very heavy rainfall late Wednesday evening into very early Thursday morning, primarily between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.
- The area that saw training — or multiple showers and storms — was DuPage into central Cook County, including the immediate north side of Chicago, where more than 2 inches of rain fell.
- This resulted in flash flooding, especially under viaducts, including those under Lake Shore Drive which resulted in the closure of the major road for nearly two hours.
- The likelihood of heavy rain and the potential for flooding within the region during this period had been mentioned in the forecast since the weekend.

- Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 61. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
- Saturday Night: Showers likely before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
- Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 63.
