Just a quick reminder that, after the Halloween fun, it’s always a good idea to recycle your squash.

And, of course, it’s a much better thing to do than squashing your recycling. (You’re not supposed to crush plastic bottles, aluminum cans, or paper cartons. See this article for details.)

Pumpkin & Squash Recycling Event — Saturday, Nov. 12

Kane County, in conjunction with Pushing the Envelope Farm and Northern Illinois Food Bank, are offering a free pumpkin recycling event in Geneva on Saturday, Nov. 2, to help you reduce your seasonal holiday waste.

Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland is asking residents to mark their calendars for this recycling event.

“Jack O’Lanterns, pumpkins and decorative squashes are highly compostable, and it is a real shame to just send them to a landfill, when the nutrients they contain could instead be returned to soil that will grow more healthy food!” she said. “Spread the word! Tell your neighbors and friends to utilize this great service to get all those old pumpkins composted instead of landfilled!”

2019 Pumpkin Recycling Event

• When: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019.
• Where: Pushing the Envelope Farm, 1700 Averill Road in Geneva.
• What: Organizers will be accepting pumpkins and squashes for composting right on a farm! It is very important to keep it contaminant-free; just like food scrap composting.
• What NOT To Include: candles, yarn hair, stickers, googly eyes, plastic ears, plastic of any kind.
