A Kane County Sheriff’s Office investigation has retrieved multiple stolen items — including several guns — and landed a residential burglary charge against a 25-year-old South Elgin man.

According to a Sheriff’s Office news release, sheriff’s deputies and detectives had been investigating two residential burglaries that took place on Sept. 23 — one in the 13N600 block of Coombs Road and the other in the 41W481 block of Plato Road.

An area resident was able to provide detectives with a license plate from a vehicle that was seen in the area of one of the burglaries, the Sheriff’s Office said.

On Oct. 8, deputies and detectives located the vehicle in the area of Main Street and Middle Street in South Elgin.

Deputies stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Chefonne Montgomery. Deputies learned that Montgomery had a suspended driver’s license, and he was taken into custody.

Officers obtained a search warrant for Montgomery’s vehicle, where they found what they believe to be additional proceeds from the burglaries. They then conducted a consent search of Montgomery’s residence and found more items believed to have been taken in the burglaries.

Deputies were able to recover several firearms that were stolen, as well as electronics and musical instruments.

Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain credited the diligence and swift action by deputies and investigators that led to the recovery of stolen items and said the recovery of firearms was particularly important.

“This type of crime is one of the primary methods that illegal guns make it to our streets and are eventually used in violent crimes,” he said.

The charges against Montgomery are not proof of guilt. He is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
