A St. Charles man who was shot during a May 2018 encounter with police will get probation and mental health treatment after pleading guilty for making a false 911 call, and pointing what appeared to be a handgun at officers.

Christopher C. Kemble, Jr., 21, has agreed to a sentence of 2½ years’ probation in exchange for a guilty plea to the offense aggravated assault of a peace officer, a Class 4 felony.

In addition to probation, Kemble must wear an alcohol monitoring device for 90 days, continue mental health treatment, undergo a psychological evaluation and follow all recommendations of the evaluation and continue to take all prescribed medication.

Kane County Circuit Judge Kathryn D. Karayannis accepted the plea.

At about noon April 26, 2018, Kemble called 911 and stated that a burglary was in progress at his residence on Voltaire Lane in St. Charles and that the intruder had a gun. Multiple police officers responded to the residence to find Kemble outside and in possession of something that appeared to be a handgun.

Kemble pointed it at a uniformed officer, causing the officer to fear for his safety and fire his weapon at Kemble, striking him. Officials said the device that Kemble was holding was designed to look like a handgun but was not a handgun.

During the investigation, police learned that Kemble prior to the incident had recorded a video in which he stated, “I’m either going to the hospital right now or I’m going to get shot by the cops.”

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Vincent Coyle prosecuted the case.
