Konen’s essay on “What Freedom of Speech Means to Me” was chosen as the winner of the $500 tuition scholarship by Bond’s wife, Marion.

The Western Kane County Republican Organization started the scholarship to honor former chairman Stan Bond, who died in February 2019. Bond was a long-time Sugar Grove precinct committeeman, a Montgomery village trustee, the state central committeeman for the 14th Congressional District, and was engaged in his community in many other ways.

Konen, a student at Marmion Academy in Aurora, was presented with a certificate and check toward his tuition at Western Townships’ annual picnic on Sept. 28 in Burlington.

The scholarship will be awarded annually and is open to high school and college students residing in the Western Townships of Hampshire, Rutland, Burlington, Plato, Virgil, Kaneville, Blackberry, Big Rock, and Sugar Grove.

The essay topic for the 2020 scholarship will be announced in January. Students applying for the scholarship must have plans to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college or private high school for the 2020-21 academic year. Funds will be distributed directly to the school.

Applications will be available online in January 2020 at www.westernkaneGOP.com.
