UPDATE: State Closes Fox River For Boating — Again — After Thursday Deluge
You know how we put out a news release a few days ago announcing that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources had lifted restrictions for boating and other water-related recreational activities on the Fox River in Kane County?
Well, scratch that.
The Fox River in Kane County has been closed again to boating and other recreational water activities due to high water levels.
The area was hit by 2.5 inches of rain in about two hours early Thursday.
Prior to that, boat and canoe launches were closed on Sept. 13 due to high water levels, but officials said on Sept. 30 that water levels were lower and the river was reopened. But again, that’s no longer the case.
The reason for the closure is high Fox River water levels, swift current, floating debris, submerged structures and piers have created conditions significantly hazardous to navigate. The conditions are treacherous for emergency service personnel called upon to rescue people involved in boating mishaps.
One such event took place in Aurora, where a woman was saved on Friday, Sept. 13, in a dramatic Fox River rescue.
