‘Wow’ Demonstrations at Elgin Fire Department’s Crowd-Pleasing Oct. 12 Open House!
Drones! High-rise rope rescue! Live firefighting demonstrations! Antique fire engine rides!
All this and a whole lot more will be on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, when the Elgin Fire Department hosts its annual open house at the Fire Station 2, located at 650 Big Timber Road in Elgin.
The public is invited to attend this free, family-friendly event which provides the opportunity to learn about fire safety, meet firefighters and paramedics, view demonstrations and more.
“The open house is always a crowd pleaser, especially for the kids,” said Chief David Schmidt. “The Fire Department staff loves to engage with the community and share the many aspects of their jobs. The team puts a lot of work into making sure the open house is both fun and educational.”
During the open house, attendees can enjoy refreshments, children’s activities and antique fire engine rides. The following demonstrations are planned:
- High Rise Rope Rescue Demonstration —11 a.m.
- Building Fire Response Demonstration — 12:30 p.m.
- Live Fire Behavior and Sprinkler Demonstration — 1 p.m.
- Fire Department Drone Demonstration
Several informational displays will be on site with representatives to answer questions:

- Local Hospitals
- Waste Management
- Nicor
- ComEd
In addition, the Elburn Lions Club will offer free children’s eye exams and Los Comales will provide tacos.
National Fire Prevention Week 2019 is Oct. 6 through Oct. 12. This year’s theme for National Fire Prevention Week is, “Not all heroes wear a cape. Plan and practice your escape.”
