NWS: Earliest Bitter Cold in Kane County History — And More Snow Coming
More weather records were shattered like ice Tuesday (Nov. 12, 2019) — and there’s additional misery ahead, according to the National Weather Service Chicago.
As this is written, it’s 18 degrees Fahrenheit, with a 29 MPH wind and a Wind Chill Factor of 2 degrees in Kane County, IL.
Yesterday might have been worse.

Record Cold Temperatures
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport set both a record low and a record cold maximum temperature for Nov. 12.
- The low of 7 degrees broke the previous record low of 8 degrees set in 1986, and the high of 17 broke the previous record cold maximum of 28 degrees set in 1995.
- Rockford set both a record low and a record cold maximum temperature for Nov. 12. The low of 3 degrees broke the previous record low of 7 degrees set in 1986, and the high of 16 broke the previous record cold maximum of 27 degrees set in 1986
- The high temperature of 17 degrees recorded at Chicago O’Hare on Nov. 12 is the earliest cool season high temperature in the teens ever recorded in the roughly 150 year period of record. The previous earliest occurrence was an 18 degree high temperature on Nov. 18, 1933.
- The high temperature of 16 degrees recorded at Rockford on Nov. 12 is also the earliest cool season high temperature in the teens on record. The previous earliest occurrence was a 16 degree high temperature on Nov. 17, 2014.
Timing of Snow
Light snow is expected to develop across far northern IL by early this evening (5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019).
The best chances of snow will primarily be along and north of I-88, where some minor accumulations of less than 1 inch are possible. Expect the light snow to end from west to east after midnight.
Expected Snow Accumulation
Light snow is expected to develop into far northern Illinois late this afternoon (Wednesday), and spread east across the area into early evening.
Minor accumulations are possible, mainly along and north of the I-88 corridor.
Areas right along the Wisconsin border will have the greatest chance of accumulation, with up to 1 inch possible into southern WI. Snow will end from west to east between midnight and 4 a.m.

- Today: A 20 percent chance of snow after 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 25. Breezy, with a south southwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
- Tonight: A 50 percent chance of snow, mainly between 7pm and 3am. Cloudy, with a steady temperature around 24. South southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 15 mph.
- Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 30. West northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
- Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 15. West wind around 5 mph, with gusts as high as 10 mph.
- Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 34. West wind around 5 mph becoming north in the afternoon.
- Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21.
Warming By Weekend
While not as cold as Tuesday, it will be windy and cold today.
Light snow is likely from late today through tonight across far northern IL. Minor accumulations of an inch or less are possible, mainly near the IL-WI border.
Temps will moderate slowly to near 40 by Sunday.
