What’s Closed, What’s Open And What’s Happening Thanksgiving Weekend 2019 in Kane County, IL
We’ve already posted an article about the big retailers that are open and closed on Thanksgiving Day 2019, but we are just now getting to our Thanksgiving holiday tradition of letting you know what’s closed and open in local government and businesses.
Right off the bat, we’ll point out that Kane County non-emergency offices are closed both Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, 2019. Most offices of cities and villages are closed both days, but there are a few exceptions. (See below.)

Many students have a full week off, but some districts have parent conferences on Monday through Wednesday, and each district has its own schedule. The Batavia District 101 calendar, for example, says school is off for Thanksgiving break from Wednesday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Nov. 30.

Cities and Villages
The following is information on non-emergency office hours for Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in Kane County villages and cities based on the calendar information of each office’s website. IMPORTANT NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, offices are considered closed if the website makes no mention of closing.
- Village of Algonquin offices are closed both days.
- City of Aurora offices are closed Thanksgiving Day. (Friday not clear on website.)
- City of Batavia administrative offices are closed both days.
- Village of Big Rock offices are closed both days. (Regular office hours are 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays.)
- Village of Burlington offices are closed both days — and always closed on Fridays.
- Village of Campton Hills offices are closed both days.
- Village of Carpentersville offices are closed Thanksgiving Day. (Friday not clear on website.)
- Village of East Dundee offices are closed both days.
- Village of Elburn offices are both days.
- City of Elgin offices are closed both days.

Garbage Collection
This category could fall under the cities and villages header, but there are township services, as well.
For the most part, curbside garbage and recycling services are delayed a day for any pickups on Thursday or Friday, but it’s always best to check with your waste hauler. Here’s a list, courtesy of Kane County Recycles.

Libraries And Park Districts
Local libraries and park district office hours truly are a mixed bag. Virtually all are closed on Thanksgiving Day, but closings on Friday, Nov. 29, vary. Some libraries, like Geneva Public Library, close a little early on Thanksgiving eve but are open on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Post Offices
- Postal offices are closed on Thursday, Nov. 28, but open on Friday, Nov. 29.
Schools
- All local schools are closed Thursday and Friday.
- Many are closed or have parent conferences Monday through Wednesday.

Special Events
Batavia hosts the Fox And Turkey Run on Thanksgiving morning. The 2019 Fox & Turkey Run will take place from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 28. There will be several temporary roadblocks and traffic interruptions throughout the Northwest side of the city.
St. Charles Holiday Homecoming includes the tree-lighting event on Friday and the light parade on Saturday.
