Aurora Gives Notice To 19 Sex Offenders To Move From Wayside Cross By Jan. 15
The city of Aurora has given notice to 19 convicted sex offenders who live at Wayside Cross Ministries, located at 215 E. New York St. in downtown Aurora, that they must relocate by Jan. 15.
According to an Aurora Police Department news release, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin will hold a press briefing at 4:30 p.m. today (Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019) to discuss the notices and “put this most recent action in context of what has taken place since February 2019.”
In a statement released Sunday, Aurora police said the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office concurred with the city’s previous determination that McCarty Park is a playground within the meaning of Illinois law and that the property constituting Wayside Cross Ministries is located within 500 feet of that playground
Illinois law prohibits child sex offenders from residing within 500 feet of a playground.
“Illinois law requires sex offenders to register their residential address with their local police department, but there is no legal authority for the Aurora Police Department to register child sex offenders at locations where the law does not permit them reside,” officials said.
If residents do not leave prior to the Jan. 15 deadline, police officials said the department will notify the State’s Attorney’s Office, which may, “upon investigation, authorize the prosecution of any child sex offender who is residing at Wayside Cross.”
