New I-88 Interchange at Route 47 Opens Economic Development in Sugar Grove

The I-88 interchange at IL Route 47 is now officially open.

Village of Sugar Grove President Sean Michels said all lanes will be open today (Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019) following a 1 p.m. ribbon cutting at Waubonsee Community College.

Although construction began in April on the interchange, Michels said the project was 15 years in the making.

This year’s work completes an existing partial interchange that only provided access to and from the west. The interchange now allows access to Route 47 from I-88 from both the east and west.

Tony Speciale, the village’s public works director, says on the embedded video that the new ramp opens up Sugar Grove, Elburn and the region to and from the city of Chicago.

“Economic development, job opportunities are very important to the area,” he said. “It’s a regional improvement. Commuters will use this interchange as well as the truck traffic that goes up and down IL 47.”

The $25 million interchange project was constructed in partnership with the village of Sugar Grove, Kane County and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
