Kane County is now accepting clothing and textiles at two electronics recycling drop-off locations and will accept clothing and textiles at a number of recycling events set for 2020.

According to the U.S. EPA, a whopping 85% of all discarded textiles — 11 million tons — are sent to U.S. landfills every year. But clothes, linens, blankets, and other textiles are highly reusable, and if not usable then definitely recyclable.

“I am thrilled to be able to offer this convenient option for residents to recycle their old clothes — and to help keep those clothes out of the landfill,” Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said.

Kane County accepts clean clothing, paired shoes, bedding, towels, and clean household textiles in any condition. It also accepts cloth toys, accessories and purses.

Once you donate your textiles at the drop-off locations, wearable clothes and shoes are sorted for reuse, and damaged or worn textiles are turned into wiping rags or insulation blankets. Beyond that, the remains are sorted for use in fiber products — such as insulation, packing material or carpeting.

The drop-off locations are 517 E. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, and the West Dundee Public Works Office, 900 Angle Tarn.

The Kane County recycling center on East Fabyan Parkway is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The West Dundee Public Works facility accepts electronics and clothing from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Kane County’s electronics recycler, eWorks has partnered with RewearAble to collect clothing and textiles for reuse and recycling. Both organizations are non-profits that provides sustainable employment for adults with disabilities.

Kane County also will collect clothing and textiles during its 2020 recycling events at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. The events are from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
