Q: This is a question for your recycling expert:

I have read the Kane County Recycling guidelines for batteries and have noted the drop-off sites in Aurora. However, I am concerned about the requirement to tape the top of each battery.

I currently have about 100 batteries to be recycled. What kind of tape should I use? Do I have to tape the top of each battery individually? Won’t the tape come off when I place many, many batteries in the same bag? How about wrapping a group of batteries in masking tape or blue painters tape?

I am very willing to recycle my batteries, so please help. Thank you!

A: You don’t have to tape all batteries.

Hi Donna!

The purpose of taping batteries is to block the contact points for safety so they do not heat up.

You do not need to tape AA, AAA, AAAA, C, or D batteries.

You will only need to tape some batteries, and scotch tape is fine

  • 9-volt and 12-volt batteries — Put tape across the top of the contacts. You need to start and end the tape on the sides so it sticks, of course. See the feature photo, which we’ll also post below.
  • Coin shaped batteries, or button cell batteries — Tape both sides. Just fold a piece of tape around it to sandwich it.
  • Lithium ion, small seat lead acid batteries — Tape over the contact points on any lithium ion, small sealed lead acid, bundled as well.
