St. Charles is sending a message to local businesses that sell vaping products to minors.

Acting in his capacity as liquor control commissioner, St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina last month enforced local ordinances for a business at a hearing before the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission.

Smokin Ace, 210 W. Main St., was cited for selling tobacco/alternative nicotine product to a minor on Oct. 30, 2019. The licensee is required to pay a $500 fine and $500 court costs.

“Problems with young people vaping have become more prevalent,” Rogina said in a city of St. Charles news release. “I have a low tolerance for this type of violation. It is clearly within my authority to address future violations with a license suspension or revocation.”

As of Nov. 27, the state of Illinois has seen 188 cases of e-cigarette or vaping-product use related to lung injury, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health website.

Kane, DuPage, Will and Cook are the only Illinois counties to have reported 10 or more such cases, according to the IDPH.
