UPDATE: What’s Open, Closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day 2019 in Kane County

With Christmas falling smack dab in the middle of the work week this year, there is some nuance to the 2019 “what’s closed, what’s open” story in Kane County, IL.
As usual, the stock exchanges are closed on Christmas Day and big-box stores are open on Christmas Eve, but only to certain times.

Interestingly, some municipal government offices are closed just for Christmas, some on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and others on Christmas Day and the day after Christmas.
Kane County non-emergency offices are closed on Christmas Day.
Kane County Connects will take a couple days off in addition to the Christmas holiday. There will be a daily e-newsletter on Monday, Dec. 23, and Tuesday, Dec. 24, but we’ll be off for the balance of the work week.
Banks
- The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is closed Christmas Day but open on Christmas Eve Day on Tuesday, Dec. 24.
- Local banks are closed for the Christmas holiday, as well. Hours for Christmas Eve Day vary, so consult your local bank before you go.
Businesses
- Many local businesses are closed Christmas Day, but consult your local chambers of commerce for more information. Most restaurants — and most of the big-name fast-food chains — are open, from Applebee’s to Waffle House.
- Many big-name retail stores close between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Wal-Mart says that for Dec. 24, it will remain open up until 6 p.m. throughout the U.S.
- Many pharmacies will be open, including CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid, but the hours may vary. Call ahead before making the trip.
Cities And Villages
All municipalities’ non-emergency offices, including public works facilities, are closed Dec. 25, in observance of the Christmas holiday. Most are also closed Dec. 24, but check out the links and information below for specifics.
Waste and recycling collection services generally operate a holiday schedule, and that usually means a one-day delay.

Kane County
- Kane County non-emergency offices are closed Christmas Day.

Kane County Courts
- Kane County’s 16th Judicial Circuit Court closes at 4:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve and is closed on Christmas Day.
Libraries and Park Districts
- Most libraries are closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. (Geneva, for example.) But check these links to see if yours is closed or open Christmas Eve.
- Park districts and their recreation facilities are a mixed bag, but many close early on Christmas Eve Day. Geneva recreation centers, as an example, are closed at 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Post Offices
- Postal offices are closed Christmas Day but have usual hours Christmas Eve.
Schools
- Local schools are closed for the holiday break. Schools’ winter breaks vary, but many have off Monday, Dec. 23, through Friday, Jan. 3, 2019.
- Waubonsee Community College fall semester ends at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20. The spring 2020 semester starts Jan. 21. Waubonsee’s Small Business Development Center office is closed for winter holiday break and will re-open on Thursday, Jan. 2.
- Elgin Community College winter break starts Monday, Dec. 23, and offices reopen Thursday, Jan. 2. The spring 2020 semester begins Monday, Jan. 13.

State Government
- The great state of Illinois observes Christmas Day as the holiday, but not Christmas Eve. The Secretary of State’s facilities are closed both Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25, for the Christmas holiday.
Transportation
METRA
- Metra will modify train schedules on several days, offer special holiday passes, and expand its Family Fares program in the coming weeks to better serve the needs of customers during the holiday season.
- On Monday, Dec. 23, Tuesday, Dec. 24, Monday, Dec. 30 and Tuesday, Dec. 31, all lines except the Heritage Corridor will adjust schedules to add early afternoon departures from Metra’s downtown stations to accommodate workers and shoppers leaving downtown early. Some normal rush-hour trains will be canceled on those days.
- In addition to the schedule changes for Tuesday, Dec. 31, Metra, for the first time in its history, will offer free rides on all trains arriving at or departing from Metra’s downtown stations after 6 p.m.
- On some of its lines, Metra will hold the last train of the evening for a later departure time to accommodate customers attending New Year’s Eve festivities downtown. (The last trains will depart between 1:10 a.m. and 1:25 a.m., depending on the line.) Alcohol is prohibited on all trains after 7 p.m. on Dec. 31. The last departures are listed in this summary.
- Metra will also make special holiday passes available for unlimited travel Dec. 24-25 and Jan. 1. The Dec. 24-25 pass will cost $10 for unlimited rides and a $5 unlimited ride pass will be available for travel Jan. 1. The regular $10 weekend pass will also be available for Dec. 21-22 and Dec. 28-29.
- Metra hasn’t left out families for its holiday season deals and will expand its Family Fares program on weekdays from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3 for the holiday break, meaning Family Fares will be in effect from Dec. 21 through Jan. 5. Family Fares, which are always available for weekend travel, allow up to three kids 11 and under to ride free with each adult.
- Customers are reminded that a Sunday/holiday schedule will be in effect on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. There will be no service on the North Central Service, SouthWest Service and Heritage Corridor lines on those days.
PACE BUS
- On Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, some routes will run on Sunday schedules or modified schedules, but most routes will not operate.
- Some commuter routes will have modified schedules on other days surrounding the holidays. Most buses will operate regularly on Dec. 24 and Dec. 30, but Pace’s offices will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 24 and Dec. 30.
