Aurora Gang Member Gets 16 Years in Prison For Shooting at Police

An Aurora man will go to prison for shooting his gun at three Aurora police officers.

Jorge L. Guzman

Jorge L. Guzman, 24, agreed on Dec. 27 to a sentence of 16 years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to two counts of the offense of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer, Class X felony.

Kane County Circuit Judge Donald M. Tegeler, Jr., accepted the plea.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams stated in court that on May 24, 2017, multiple undercover Aurora police officers were investigating a street gang regarding a recent string of burglaries, including a number of gun thefts. During the investigation, an unmarked Aurora police van pulled into the driveway of a residence on East Grove Street.

A vehicle in which Guzman was riding drove past and stopped. Guzman got out of the car and ran toward the van. An officer in the van rolled down a window and shouted several times, “Stop! Police!” Guzman and the officer knew one another because of several previous encounters between them.

Guzman continued to run at the van, pulling a handgun from his waistband and then pointing it at the van. An officer in the van then fired his gun at Guzman, who ducked behind a tree and fired at least three shots in the direction of the van.

In accordance with Illinois law, Guzman must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. Guzman receives credit for 948 days served in the Kane County jail.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon thanked Sams, “whose work in this case assured that Mr. Guzman is going to prison, where he won’t be a threat to the community for many years.”

“This is another example of how gangs and guns create a violent atmosphere that endangers police officers and citizens,” he added. “Mr. Guzman should consider himself fortunate that no one was killed.”
