A Chicago man will go to prison for beating his estranged wife at her Aurora home.

Kane County Circuit Judge Charles E. Petersen sentenced 40-year-old Tavares Sanders to six years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Petersen on Oct. 1 convicted Sanders of the offenses of aggravated domestic battery with great bodily harm, a Class 2 felony, and two counts of domestic battery, a Class 4 felony.

Sanders waived his right to a jury trial.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Julie Gerding and Kelli Schmidt presented evidence that late Jan. 25 and early Jan. 26, 2017, Sanders went to the Aurora home of his estranged wife, accused her of infidelity and hit and punched her.

He then slammed her head into a wall and punched her in the eye, causing a black eye. Sanders fled when the victim threatened to call police. The victim followed Sanders, who again attacked her and threw her to the sidewalk, causing a severe gash to her forehead.

At the time of the attack, Sanders was on parole for a 2015 conviction for domestic battery.

In accordance with Illinois law, Sanders must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. Sanders receives credit for 616 days served in the Kane County jail.
