‘Impactful’ Winter Storm System Coming Friday, Saturday; Flood Watch in Effect
The National Weather Service Chicago says Kane County and the surrounding region is about to be hit by an “impactful” winter storm system.
“We continue to monitor the potential for a significant winter storm across the region Friday night through Saturday night,” the NWS said in its Weather Story. “The potential exists for significant impacts from freezing rain, sleet, and snow across parts of our area, although confidence on the exact placement and magnitude of threats remains low.”
“Torrential rain” is possible on Friday night (Jan. 10, 2020), with rainfall totals as high as 4 inches. If it turns to snow, some sources say, it could be as much as 8 inches.
The NWS Chicago says to check back for updates as officials continue to refine the forecast.
Flood Watch in Effect
A Flood Watch is in effect for locales along and southeast of I-55 for Friday Night and into Saturday.
Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts, appear possible, which could lead to flooding of low lying and other flood prone areas in addition to river rises through the weekend and into next week.
In addition, a period of torrential rainfall could lead to flash flooding.
Stay tuned for additional updates as this portion of the forecast is refined.
Significant River Flooding Possible
The area already is saturated, and the amount of rain or snow coming could be bad — although the Fox River is not likely to be the hardest hit, the NWS said.
Significant river flooding possible on area rivers, particularly along the Iroquois, Kankakee, and Illinois Rivers. For the latest river observations and forecasts, go to this page of the NWS website.
