An Indiana man is headed to prison for trying to kill his ex-wife at her place of employment two years ago in Sugar Grove.

Kane County Circuit Judge Donald M. Tegeler, Jr., sentenced 50-year-old Kennrith L. Foster to 80 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Judge Tegeler on Oct. 22 convicted Foster of the offenses of:

• Attempted first-degree murder, Class X felony
  
• Armed robbery, Class X felony, 3 counts
  
• Armed violence, Class X felony, 3 counts
  
• Aggravated battery with a firearm, Class X felony
  
• Aggravated domestic battery, Class 2 felony
  
• Unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, Class 3 felony

Foster waived his right to a jury trial.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Greg Sams and Hillary Sadler presented evidence that around 3 a.m. Dec. 17, 2017, Foster entered a business in the 300 block of Sugar Grove Parkway, Sugar Grove, in search of his former wife. He approached her, put a handgun to her head and fired a single shot, striking her in the head. Foster then beat, strangled and stomped the victim before fleeing the scene.

The FBI took him into custody 11 days later in Phoenix.

According to Illinois law, Foster must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. Foster receives credit for 726 days served in the Kane County jail.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon thanked ASAs Sams and Sadler, and to the Sugar Grove Police Department, for their hard work.

“I hope this victim finds justice in this sentence, and relief in the knowledge that Mr. Foster will be spending the rest of his life behind bars,” McMahon said.
