SAO: Charges Filed in Overdose Death of West Dundee Woman

An alleged heroin dealer faces criminal charges in the 2018 overdose death of 30-year-old Crystal Villegas of West Dundee.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon has charged 22-year-old Gehovani R. Gomez of Elgin with the offense of drug-induced homicide, Class X felony.

Gehovani R. Gomez

Kane County prosecutors allege that on Sept. 6, 2018, Villegas ingested heroin that she purchased from Gomez, overdosed and died. The Kane County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of Villegas’ death to be heroin and fentanyl intoxication.

Kane County Associate Judge Julia Yetter signed a warrant for Gomez’s arrest and set his bail at $500,000 with 10 percent ($50,000) to apply for bond.

His initial court appearance is to be determined.

Gomez remains in custody in the Cook County jail in an unrelated case.

If convicted, Gomez faces a sentence of between 6 and 30 years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The West Dundee Police Department conducted the investigation.

The charges against Gomez are not proof of guilt. Gomez is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
