State’s Attorney’s Office: Felonies Up 4.4% Year Over Year

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said this week that data from 2019 indicates a 4% increase in felony prosecutions year over year.

At a media briefing on Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2020), Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said his office will have a detailed breakdown of felonies and other crimes in its annual report in February.

A Daily Herald story said 2019 Kane County felony case filings were up 4.4% compared to last year and have increased four years in a row.

The newspaper reported that Kane County prosecutors filed 2,604 felony cases in 2019. The SAO filed 2,494 felony cases in 2018.

McMahon said the additional case load was not likely to affect staffing in the office.

The SAO charged about 4,200 misdemeanors in 2019, down from about 5,600 filed in 2015, according to the article.
