Aurora and Elgin each have great schedules of events for the weekend of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Here is a summary of those events, plus a list of what’s open and what’s closed on MLK Day 2020.

Events

3 Days of Activities in Aurora

Aurora will honor the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a series of public events this weekend.

On Martin Luther King Day — Monday, Jan. 20 — the city of Aurora will host the 35th annual MLK Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at Waubonsie Valley High School, 2590 Ogden Ave.

With the theme ‘From Dreams to Visions to Victory,” the celebration will feature oratorical and musical performances by local students, a highlight of mentoring programs in Aurora, a presentation of the Donna J. Williams Service Awards and the Mayor’s Service Above Self Awards and remarks from special guests Political Analyst April Ryan and Pastor Smokie Norful.

The ceremony will conclude a weekend-long celebration of Dr. King, which includes other events:

I DREAM, TOO — 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020

A mentoring workshop for young men in elementary and middle school, the I Dream, Too meeting will be held at the Aurora Public Library. High school and college mentors will help students build dream boards and talk about Dr. King’s dream.

BREAK THE STAGE — 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020

Dr. King was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Following in the stepping tradition of Divine 9 fraternities and sororities, the Break the Stage Step Competition will be held at Waubonsie Valley High School with celebrity host V103 radio personality Bionce Fox.

Cost: $10 for children | $15 for adults

MLK LUNCHEON — 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020

AGAPE Connection and Cathedral of Grace hosts the 19th MLK Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel featuring the MLK Oratorical Competition, the MLK Awards and other special performances.

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE’S BLUEPRINT? — 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020

Based on a speech delivered to students by Dr. King in 1967, the ‘What is Your Life’s Blueprint?’ will be held at the Aurora Police Department for all students in high school and college. Mayor Irvin will be joined by author Kevin Davenport to speak with students about their life’s blueprint and planning for lifelong success.

MLK CONCERT — 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020

The Voices and Alderman Scheketa Hart-Burns present the annual MLK Concert at Main Baptist Church featuring The Voices Community Choir, Minister Tim White, the Universal Show Choir, a special tribute to the late Elder Byron Berry and so much more

MLK PRAYER BREAKFAST — 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2020

The FVCMA and Aurora Township will hold the annual MLK Community Prayer Breakfast at Gayles Memorial Baptist Church. Free, but space is limited

DAY OF SERVICE — 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2020

Students and their parents can volunteer to serve on MLK Day during the annual Day of Service. 13 locations and more than 300 volunteer slots are going fast. All volunteers will be honored at the City’s MLK Ceremony on the same day at 6:30 p.m.

Elgin Celebrates MLK Day

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Prayer Breakfast – SOLD OUT!

8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, at Elgin Community College

This year’s theme is GIVE US THE BALLOT.  Dr. King said, “Voting is the foundation stone for political action.” The League of Women Voters will be on-site ready to register people to vote. Click here for voter registration identification requirements.

Would you like to exhibit your products for sale at the Prayer Breakfast and/or Youth Leadership Conference and help support the MLK Scholarship Fund?  Click here for the exhibitor form.

MLK Calendar

Your support can come in the form of purchasing an ad for a 2020 calendar which will be distributed at the Annual Prayer Breakfast and sold at City Hall.

Your ad and business card donations will be used to help off-set the general costs of all activities, including supporting the scholarships which will be presented to graduating high school students from Elgin. Your support will help us carry forward the dream of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Food Drive

In 2019, Elgin collected and distributed 60,000 pounds of food and personal care items for Elgin’s needy families.

What’s Open, Closed MLK Day

With the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday on Monday, Jan. 20, here’s a quick look at what is open and closed in Kane County, IL.

Banks

Businesses

  • Most retail businesses are open Monday, Jan. 21, 2019. That includes department stores, restaurants and grocery stores.

Cities and Villages

The following is information on non-emergency office hours for Monday, Jan. 20, in Kane County villages and cities based on the calendar information of each office’s website. Click here for links to local government offices in Kane County.

Generally, garbage and recycling collection will not be affected by MLK day. The waste haulers we contacted said regular collection schedules will be maintained Monday — but it’s always a good idea to check with local public works offices at the links below to make sure.

Proudly, Illinois was the first state to adopt MLK Day, in 1973. It wasn’t until 1993 that that all 50 states held MLK Day in one form or another — and even then it was “sometimes under a different name, and not always as a paid state holiday,” according to infoplease.com.
