Literacy Volunteers Needed — Workshops Coming July 2015
July 13, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
FreeLiteracy Volunteers Fox Valley has a waiting list of adults who are eager to learn English. If you can help, you will want to attend one of the two tutor training workshops that Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley will offer this summer.
The first four-session workshop will be held from 6:30pm to 9:00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, July 13, 15, 20, and 22 at the St. Charles Public Library.
The second workshop will be held from 6:30pm to 9:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 11, 13, 18, and 20 at the St. Charles Public Library.
Each workshop will cover the techniques used to teach adults English while discussing the problems that they face when they are unfamiliar with American culture. Volunteers will explore cultural awareness, basic English language needs, conversation techniques, practice drills and more.
Each workshop graduate will be matched with one adult student. You will meet for one hour each week at a time and public location that is convenient. Most volunteer tutors meet with their students at the St. Charles, Batavia, Geneva, or Town & Country Public Libraries. Other meeting locations are also available.
Volunteer tutors do not need to know a second language or have a background in education to help. Adult students say that the best tutors are patient, are good listeners, and give practical information.
