Metra is reporting that inbound and outbound trains experienced extensive delays to the Monday-night commute due to a train derailment involving North Central Service train #107 near Western Avenue.

Crews continued working to correct this issue through Monday night, but as of 11 p.m., there was no assurance that the problems would be fixed in time for Tuesday morning.

“Crews will be working throughout the evening to restore normal service for the morning rush hour commute,” Metra said on its “Service Updates & Alerts” page. “Please refer to metrarail.com for any updated information regarding delays or operation changes as they become available. Metra apologizes for any inconvenience.”

The CTA Brown line honored Metra tickets from downtown Chicago to Kimball and CTA Blue line honored Metra tickets from downtown to O’Hare.

No injuries were reported in the derailment, which involved a single locomotive, according to the Chicago Tribune and other media.

In addition to Elgin, there were delays to the the North Central Lines to Antioch and the Milwaukee North line to Fox Lake.

Riders on the Milwaukee North Line were urged to find alternate transportation Monday and consider alternate transportation Tuesday.

“Please listen to station platform announcements for train locations and refer to Rail-Time Tracker on metrarail.com for current delay time information,” Metra’s website said.

Metra will provide updated information as it becomes available.
