Update on Grand Prairie Gateway Project in Kane County

Work continues this week on the Grand Prairie Gateway project, the new 345kV electric transmission line that’s being constructed between Commonwealth Edison’s existing Byron and Wayne substations, running through Ogle, DeKalb, Kane and DuPage counties.
In Kane County, the line runs through parts of St. Charles Township, Plato Township and Burlington Township.
Here’s what’s happening this week:
- Aldridge Electric will continue installation of foundations between Nesler and Muirhead Roads.
- Emerald will continue the installation of soil erosion/sedimentation control between Nesler and Muirhead Roads and perform adjustments and maintenance to the route as necessary.
- New South will continue matting installation between Nesler and Muirhead Roads. As the Overhead Transmission ComEd crews complete setting of structures, the work pads will be reduced in size and the mats loaded out to complete working pads further down towards the area between Nesler and Muirhead Roads ComEd Overhead Transmission:
- Scheduled for completion with setting structures along Bowes Creek Subdivision by the end of week.
- Setting Crew 1 will continue work on structures between Nolan and Nesler Roads in the early part of the week.
- Arcadis will continue removing spoils between Nolan and Nesler Roads.
In addition, ComEd crews are installing bird diverters via helicopter in the South Elgin area this week.
Construction began in the Elgin/Plato Center area in mid-June, starting between Randall Road and Muirhead Road, and the section is scheduled to be completed in late fall 2015, including conductor installation, mat removal and right-of-way restoration.
In all, the $251 million project requires installation of about 400 metal power poles along the 60 miles of rights of way. Each steel pole ranges from 115 feet to 195 feet tall with four steel cross arms and a maximum width of 52 feet.
For anyone with questions about the ongoing construction work, ComEd has posted a two-page Grand Prairie FAQ online.
