Women’s Equality Day 2015: Illinois Ranks Third Best

Today (Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015) is National Women’s Equality Day, an observance commemorating the adoption of the 19th amendment. Women won the right to vote in the House in January 1918 and in the Senate in 1919, but it wasn’t until the morning of Aug. 26, 1920, that it was certified.

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied of abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex,” the amendment reads. “Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”

It’s hard to measure the state of gender equality in Kane County, IL, or anywhere for that matter, but a recent article in WalletHub tries to do exactly that. The good news is that WalletHub ranks Illinois as the third-most-gender-equal state in the union.

You can read more about the methodology here, but the bottom line is that it measured progress in three categories: Workplace Environment, Education and Political Empowerment.

Illinois was fifth in the workplace category, tied for first in education and 18th in empowerment.

WalletHub Methodology

To gauge the scope of gender-based disparities in the U.S., WalletHub compared the 50 states across three key dimensions: 1) Workplace Environment, 2) Education and 3) Political Empowerment. It then compiled 11 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights.

For each metric, WalletHub compared the differences between women and men. In certain states and for certain metrics, women have an advantage over men. In such cases, we gave equal credit to the states with no gender inequality.
