Kane Coroner To Determine Cause of Death of Oswego East Student

The Kane County Coroner’s Office is awaiting toxicology samples to determine the cause of death of a 16-year-old Montgomery student who collapsed after a gym class Friday, March 17.
According to a Coroner’s Office news release, Darion Verner, 16, of Longbeach Road in Montgomery collapsed in a locker room shortly before 1:30 p.m. Friday after playing basketball during gym class at Oswego East High School.
Verner was transported to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced deceased.
An autopsy was conducted today (Monday, March 20, 2017), and the preliminary cause of death was “pending the results of specialized forensic sample histology and toxicology,” the Coroner’s Office news release said. Toxicology and histology samples were obtained and sent to a forensic laboratory for analysis.
The Coroner’s Office said there were no obvious signs of foul play detected in the preliminary investigation.
In a message to School District 308, Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin extended heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends, faculty and students.
“As a district family and community, we are all grieving the loss of this young life,” he said. “Darion will be remembered for his love of basketball, his love for playing the drums, as a son, as a big brother and as a friend to many.”
The School District’s team of counselors, including psychologists and social workers, as well as the Kendall County Crisis Team, will be at OEHS and will be available to assist students, their families, and staff members in processing this loss throughout the coming days and weeks, Sparlin said.
