  • This article is part of a series counting down the top 10 most-read Kane County Connects stories of 2019.

There’s always at least one surprise when we put together the annual list of top 10 most-read stories.

And this is the 2019 representative.

For the past few years, Kane County Division of Environmental And Water Resources Coordinator Jessica Mino puts together an amazing “Countdown To Earth Day” series, which runs from April 1 until Earth Day on April 22.

The series is amazing for many reasons, but not the least of which is that Jessica solicits writers from all over Kane County to post stories on how to go green.

This story, submitted by Valerie Blaine, environmental education manager for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, more or less went viral by our local standards — collecting 13,906 page views.

No 4: STOP VOLCANO MULCHING!

The hard truth is you probably have been guilty of this sin in your own front or back yard.

In our No. 4 most-read story of 2019, Valerie Blaine explained why “volcano mulching” is actually killing trees in Kane County.
