Top Stories of 2019: No. 5 — Wahburgers To Open in St. Charles

  • This article is part of a series counting down the top 10 most-read Kane County Connects stories of 2019.

There’s a great deal of interest in this story, in part because it’s a new business coming to town, in part because it’s one of the first of its kind in the Chicago area.

But let’s face facts, a big reason it’s so popular is that this business has to do with a couple of big-time Hollywood celebrities who also happen to call St. Charles home.

No 5: Walburgers Is Coming in 2020

Wahlburgers St. Charles Breaks Ground, Set To Open Early 2020

Way back in March of 2019, actor, pop singer and St. Charles resident Donnie Wahlberg stood before a crowd and announced the groundbreaking of a new Wahlburgers restaurant. You can watch and hear his remarks on this YouTube video by the Daily Herald.

A few weeks later, we posted this article, with a little bit of additional information: the business was scheduled to open in early 2020.

Apparently, that was enough new information to garner 12,037 page views, making this story the fifth-most-read of 2019.

We did a quick check, and the best we can tell you via update is that the restaurant located near the Meijer store plans to open in March.

Donnie Wahlberg’s wife, it should be mentioned, is actress and St. Charles resident Jenny McCarthy.

During the groundbreaking, Wahlberg was downright complimentary of the city of St. Charles and Kane County in general.

“This entire county has welcomed us and treated us like family since Jenny and I moved here a couple years ago,” Wahlberg said. “I made a promise to the mayor that we were going to build a Wahlburgers here — we weren’t just going to chase down the big cities.”
